Edited by Mary E. Mayo

One of the most prestigious hereditary societies in the United States, the National Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims have now completed three very extraordinary volumes of lineage records of their members. Two of them we have already reprinted: Volume I, covering 1909 (when the Society was founded) to 1928; Volume II, 1929 to 1952. (See Lineages of Members of the NSSDP section below for further details.)

The present volume, the third in the Society's lineage series, covers the lineage records of 1,500 members new to the society from 1953 to 1981. (The sixteen hundred lines referred to in the title of this book is a misnomer, but that is another story.) Generation by generation, descent is traced from the earliest immigrant ancestor to the 1,500 members of the Society who joined between 1953 and 1981, the sole condition of membership in the Society being that the immigrant ancestor must have arrived in the Colonies between 1620 and 1700.

Each of the lineage records contains the names of all ancestors in the direct line of descent from the original immigrant, each with dates of birth, marriage, and death. Readers should be advised that the term "Pilgrim" in the context of this book refers to travellers to all parts of the Colonies, not just New England. In fact, as the editor points out, most Pilgrims identified here were wanderers to the mideastern and southern shores of the Colonies. For the researcher's edification, we should mention here that the index contains about 28,000 names!

In two volumes

In these two volumes are found the lineage records of 6,800 members of the National Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims-- 6,800 lineages going straight back to immigrants of the 17th century!

Volume I includes the lineages of all members of the Society from 1909, when the Society was founded, to 1928; Volume II includes lineages of members who joined the Society between 1929 and 1952. When it originally appeared, Volume I contained an imperfect index, but this was remedied in 1958 when a new index was published. With the permission of the Society, we have included the 1958 index in this reprint edition. Volume II, sadly, was published without an index, but we have remedied this deficiency ourselves by supplying a completely new name index. The two indexes together contain tens of thousands of references.

Two Volumes. 1,004 pp. total, indexed, cloth. (1929, 1958,
1953), repr. 1988. ISBN 0-8063-1210-6. $75.00
